Service Design Thinks Cologne No.4 meets “Design the new Business”

And again it‘s time for Service Design Thinks in Cologne!

14. February 2012, 19:30 Uhr, betahaus | Köln Café

We are starting into the new year with a screening of the documentation “Design the New Business”. A great opportunity to watch the movie before its actual release and to discuss it afterwards. The line-up of the movie definitively sounds promising and so does the announcement:

“As our world changes, the challenges to business grow.
Old ways of thinking are being replaced by open minds and creativity.
Design is playing a central role in helping solve problems and drive the future.
We invite you to see how design is shaping the new business.”

We are very happy to team up with Peter Schreck from Idea Republica for the 4th Service Design Thinks. In the future Idea Republic will organize regular screenings of inspirational documentations and demonstrations from the field of idea economy.

Colorful drinks and yummy soup will be served at the betahaus Büdchen.

Let‘s think and drink!

Service Design Drinks Madrid February 2012

With the start of the New Year we propose a Service Design Drinks event in Madrid because of the workshop that Vincenzo di Maria will be leading for the h2i institute. The session will be the next 28th of February at 20.00pm in UtopicUs (Calle Duque de Rivas 5, Metro Tirso de Molina).

In this meeting we want to create a debate around the topics that will be defined by all the participants at the beginning of the session. In this discussion, we will have the presence of Vincenzo di Maria, an Italian service designer and one of the founders of Common Ground.

If you are interested in joining us, please do it in the following link: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/2797977827

Looking forward to meet you all there!

Service Design Thinks 05 | Leeds | Design meets World

Doors open at 6pm, talks start at 6:30pm
Old Broadcasting House, Woodhouse Lane LS2 9EN Leeds

kindly provided by NTI Leeds (@ntileeds)

Book your tickets here:

With the profusion of digital user interfaces reaching deeper into everyday life, the joined-up view of end-to-end service design, including non-digital touchpoints, is more valuable now than ever before. How are users moving between web and mobile, and how can designers create smooth transitions across the two? How does the infrastructure of the city enhance and constrain the services to which its people have access? And how can users and stakeholders be engaged in the creation of services across such a broad canvas?

Service Design Thinks is free and open to everyone. This is a great chance to learn, debate and gather together afterwards at the pub to explore thoughts further.

Speakers:

> Andrew Swartz, Research Director, ExperienceLab
Mobile service design: apps vs. mobile sites?

Andrew will present new data about how people use mobile apps vs mobile sites, and how service designers can create a smooth experience on mobile devices when users themselves are confused about what they want out of the different options.

Service design seeks to make sure that online and offline experiences work well together. It’s a tricky business. And getting trickier. The online experience has become increasingly fractured between large screens and small; keyboard and touch; and desktop and mobile.

ExperienceLab has recently been focusing a number of research projects on the mobile part of this, which is itself fractured between apps and browser-based sites, which themselves come in many flavours. Andrew will share findings concerning how users view the different options. And he’ll offer advice about what designers can do to smooth the way for the people who use their services is this complex mobile world.

> Martin Waite - Senior UX Designer, Technophobia
User centred colloborative design

What tools, techniques, processes and games can designers use with clients and end users in order to help create great design solutions and user experiences?

Martin Waite of Sheffield-based Technophobia will share a range of good practices and examples from his work at the forefront of the web, creating enterprise level applications and dynamic sites that solve real world problems and deliver better results through superior user experience.

Techophobia is part of the Capita Group and its clients include The Co-operative Bank, Alfa Romeo, The Technology Strategy Board, Pizza Express, South Yorkshire Police, Planning Portal, RBS Insurance, Welcome to Yorkshire.

> Matt Edgar, Service Design and Innovation
Beating the bounds of digital design

Matt Edgar will present findings from the Leeds Walkshop,  produced by Service Design Leeds as part of the Leeds Digital Festival.

He’ll explain why 20 or so folk braved a wet and windy November evening to explore Leeds city centre. And he’ll urge everyone to get out more, and look critically at the real world contexts in which digital services are delivered.

A co-organiser of Service Design Leeds, Matt works in product development and innovation. His past roles include Head of Design and Usability for Orange UK and Head of Products for Mobile Multimedia in Orange Group. He is currently working on the next generation of mobile interaction using near-field communications (NFC).

Service Design Thinks Leeds | 04 Health & Experience Prototyping

Doors open at 6pm, talks start at 6:30pm

Old Broadcasting House, Woodhouse Lane LS2 9EN Leeds
kindly provided by NTI Leeds (@ntileeds)

Part 1
Jane Wood | Director, mihealth Limited | @janelwood
Cancer, creative thinking and the patient experience – designing services around peoples’ needs
After receiving ‘belt and braces’ treatment for breast cancer in 2000 Jane set out on a personal mission to work with patients, support groups and health teams to develop a personal online tool to support people as they progress through their cancer journey. Now 10 years on, Jane will share not only her user centred approach but also some of the highs and lows she has experienced in her determination to get the system into the hands of patients.
Jane’s background is in fine art and interactive media, she has been an exhibiting artist, taught on undergraduate and post graduate courses and was a research project manager at the International Centre for Digital Content at Liverpool John Moores University where the concept for mihealth was developed.  Her user centred insight and empathy with those she seeks to support also informs other providers and organisations, from concept development to the deployment of innovation digital tools and services.

Daniela Sangiorgi | Imagination, Lancaster University
Service Design and GP led Commissioning
Daniela has conducted research on Service Design since its outset and participated in the discussions about its nature and development. She has just published a book with Anna Meroni titled ‘Design for Services’ that aims to provide a first portrait of the discipline.
Recently Daniela has been investigating the way clinicians design and commission healthcare services and the potential role of design in these activities. In her presentation she will describe how she thinks service design could provide principles and tools to enhance patient engagement, collaborative design practices, and creative thinking for the now called Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Part 2
Rory Hamilton | Service Designer/Consultant | @everythingiknow
Experience Prototyping
Rory will speak about Experience Prototyping and its importance in developing and implementing services. He will show practical examples and speak about the potential pitfalls. Rory suggests a range of methods of prototyping over a service journey and through a number of channels - and shows how prototypes can be tested with users. He’ll show how you can prototype ‘bigger’ experiences than just ‘screen’ ones, and that you can do it easily, learn fast, iterate and develop your ideas.
Rory is a freelance service design consultant, and educator in service and interaction design. He is an associate at livework and his clients include Orange, Nokia and the BBC. Rory was a senior tutor at the RCA in interaction design.

Service Design Drinks have become established monthly informal gatherings, bringing together people around the world, who are interested in Service Design.

We are hoping the Bocabar will help us, by offering a room for this event.

1st Wellington Service Design Drinks

3C
Chews Ln
Wellington Central,

Delivering great experiences consistently and across all channels is now widely recognised as a key future competitive differentiator.
Join Optimal Usability for a beer on the 4th of August from 5pm upstairs at 3C in Chews lane to take part in our growing conversation about service design.

We will be discussing topics like:

• What are some great service experiences we’ve had? What does this mean for us and our relationship with those organisations that deliver them?
• How did these experiences come about? Were they designed?
• What does service design mean for the designer? What does the design process start to look like and how is this different?
• What are some of the tools that service designers use?
• How do you get stakeholder buy-in? Service design can be a long process without immediate impact – how do you communicate the benefits?

There will be a quick presentation from Optimal Usability starting at around 6pm, though we really just want to have a beer with you and a chat about your experiences and service design perspectives.

Service Design Thinks: Global Service Jam

The Global Service Jammers from Leeds will be giving an overview of the first Global Service Jam held in the city earlier this year.

GSJLeeds was part of a global event that brought service design to life across the whole world for one weekend.

We will be looking at the projects produced, what we all learned and how people have reused and developed what they learned in their everyday work and look at new ideas that are growing as a result.

Everyone is welcome… the event is free and an interesting conversation or two is guaranteed as we look to explore service design and how we can use it across different sectors and lines of business to make services better for everyone.

Service Design Drinks | Atlanta - July 14th

It will take place on July 14th at 7.00pm at JCT Bar, 1198 Howell Mill Rd, Atlanta, GA 30318. The bar is in the back of the parking lot, has amazing drinks and appetizers. It is summer, and the deck should be awesome for some great conversations.

We’ll have an open dialog, sharing some great experiences, sharing some not so great ones – we’ve all had them, those service experiences that really stood out for us, and the one’s we would rather forget. As professionals, what can we learn from these experiences? How can we grow our businesses based on these insights?

Third Service Design Drinks Madrid

Pepa Tencha
Calle de Apodaca 3
Metro Tribunal

We are back!

If architects visit buildings when traveling and gourmets look for the best food experiences, what do service designers visit when they travel abroad? Inspired by this idea the next Service Design Drinks in Madrid will explore how to create a “service design guided tour” for those visiting the city. Focused on professionals and people interested in service design who come to our city for a few days, we’ll try to locate and select the most significant services in Madrid. We hope to trigger a reflection around how services are evaluated, measured and ranked in order to create this map. Of course, if you’ve been there and there is a service you think that is worth knowing, you can add your comment with a brief description of the service, where it can be found and why you’d recommend others to use it. We’ll be sincerely grateful!

Join us next May 19th at 20:00 hrs. at Pepa Tencha (Calle de Apodaca 3, Metro Tribunal).

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Service Design Thinks Leeds | 02

Old Broadcasting House
Woodhouse Lane
LS2 9EN Leeds

We’ll be meeting at 6pm

Service Design: How we do it…
techniques in the context of live projects

In our first Service Design Thinks Leeds, we asked about the starting points for service design - the voices and insights that help us create new services and improve ones already in delivery.

This time we’ll move onto the next stage, to delve more deeply into how services are designed:

  * How do designers turn insight into action?
  * How are users involved in the creation of a service?
  * How do you translate concepts into reality?
  * Can service design change people’s behaviour or simply adapt to it?
  * What’s the difference between design and service design techniques?
  * Who designs services in different contexts?

We are delighted to welcome the following speakers:

Simon East | Drivegain
Designing a new eco-driving service
@DriveGain @SimonatHome

Simon has worked with mobile devices and applications for over 20 years. He started his career at British PDA pioneer Psion and was part of the executive team that transformed Psion’s software group into Symbian. In 2001 he founded the mobile photo uploading company Cognima (later to become ShoZu). In December 2008 he co-founded DriveGain, who produce an iPhone app that helps people save fuel as they drive.

Jean Mutton | Student Experience Project Manager, University of Derby
Designing the Enrolment experience at the University of Derby
@myderbi

The application of service design techniques is relatively new in the higher education sector, but in the light of the Browne Review and the uncertain future of HE funding, the need to place the student at the heart of the service process is gaining increased recognition. In this session, Jean will talk about the impact which a service design approach has made on the student experience of enrolment at Derby.

by Skype link: Lauren Currie | Snook, Glasgow
How Snook do Service Design in Scotland
@redjotter

With an enthusiasm for service design, public services and working with people, Lauren Currie is focused on changing the lives of British people through service design and practical action. Lauren has worked as a freelance service designer for Designthinkers in Holland, Deutsche Telekom in Berlin and London-based Future Gov. She mentors and teaches undergraduate students at universities all over Europe. As the Director of MyPolice, Lauren is working closely with police and the public to ensure the police service is the very best it can be. Snook’s most recent venture Making Service Sense is a service designed to help people make sense of the discipline of Service Design.

Who should come?
This event is open to everyone working in the design of services whether it be corporate/public/education/health/social sectors. This is a great chance to learn from three quite distinct approaches and gather together afterwards at the pub to explore thoughts further.

Everyone is welcome.

Service Design Drinks Lisboa

Espaço Wanli
This time the SDD of Lisbon will take place in a space recently open in Lisbon, that is neither a coffee nor a tearoom, it is neither a restaurant nor a pastry shop. It will be in a peculiar living room in the heart of Lisbon.

For this second edition we will have participants sharing their experience in this new subject and bringing new incentives for the discussion among all. It will consist of a small presentation on specific themes to Service Design that will help us to deepen the know-how on what the project of services involves, under the academic and client point of view.

FREE entry. To join us, please register here: http://servicedesignlisbon.eventbrite.com/

The first SDD evening in Lisbon on October 13 had an excellent adhesion and it resulted in a lively discussion and discovery of this new subject in Portugal. Service Design Drinks Berlin meet “HAPPINESS”

06.08.2010, 08:00 PM

betahaus - coworking Berlin
Prinzessinnenstraße 19-20
10969 Berlin

http://betahaus.de/

Since the first SDD took place we discussed a lot about how to adapt Service Design Drinks to our own needs and expectations and basically dealt with the format for our meetings such as book or article reviews and commonly viewing of TED talks, SD Thinks or other videos…

To combine all ideas we decided to rather focus on a specific topic than on a specific format. In practice this means we have one topic for our meeting and everybody is invited to contribute and present videos, articles, case studies, methods, book reviews, theories… and so on.
The SDD in Cologne and Berlin have the same topics so that we afterwards can exchange the in- and output of both communities. Cologne and Berlin alternately define the topic for the next SDD at the end of each SDD.

SDD/CB present their next topic:

DESIGN HAPPINESS
gross national happiness vs. gross domestic product / personal lifetime goals vs. social moral / success vs. failure / wealth vs. prosperity

All kind of contributions (small/ big, digital/ analogue, practical/ theoretical…) are welcome - everybody is a creator of this night!

Service Design Talks is a series of meetings for reflection and discussion about service design, which take place every 2 months. Using recent books, and sometimes guest speakers, we discuss the theory and practice of service design. The goal is to further explore this relatively new field to and understand it better. The meetings take place at STBY’s office in Amsterdam, and are coordinated by Geke van Dijk. To receive invitations for the meetings you can subscribe to the group pages on Facebook and LinkedIn.

San Francisco Service Design Drinks – February 18

Bar 821
821 Divisadero St
San Francisco, CA 94117
7pm – 9pm

Kicking off San Francisco’s best service design drinking and talking about service design event!

We had a bit of an ad hoc gathering in January and are attempting to keep it going and growing.  It was intimate, but passionate, with a good mix of deep service design chat and plenty of silliness.

Bar 821 is a lounge on Divis that should do well for us on a week night. Look for Jamin, who is organizing this drinks. He’ll find some clever way to let you know who he is. Bar 821 is cash only, and serves beer, wine, and sake cocktails. This is informal, experimental, adventurous, and fun! See you there!

Location: Waag Society, Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam
Time: 18.00 - 20.00
Date: Thursday, February 18, 2010

After the popular presentation and discussion evenings on service design that have been organized in London, the first Service Design Thinks meeting in Amsterdam will take place on February 18, 2010.

We will start the meeting with a number of presentations about recent service design projects. After this there is opportunity to jointly discuss current developments in the field. Finally we would like to hear your opinion about future activities of the Service Design Network Netherlands.

Remember to put the date in your agenda! A more precise program will follow soon.

After the SD Thinks session, we intend to continue with a good old SD Drinks session in a nearby pub.

We are thanking the Waag Society for making their room available.

London Service Design Drinks - 29th January

The Bunch of Grapes,
2 St Thomas Street,
Borough,
London
SE1 9RS
- www.bunchofgrapesborough.com

Service Design Drinks London is back! Join other service designers and people interested in service design for conversations and drinking. This event is open to everyone.

We’re planning to make service design drinks a monthly event from now on - the last friday of every month. If you are coming, please consider joining the mailing list and adding yourself to the Eventbrite page so other people know and we can get a feel for the numbers. We’re trying out a new venue for 2010, near London Bridge station called The Bunch of Grapes.

Its a nice old pub, with an upstairs room that doesn’t play music which should make it good for all those service design conversations. We’ll meet upstairs, and have a sign. If its your first time come and say hi to Nick, Jaimes or Lauren who organise the drinks. If this works well, we’ll stick with the Bunch of Grapes, but if its too full or people don’t like the vibes we can move it. Hopefully the regular date thing will help increase attendance and conversations throughout 2010!

Amsterdam Service Design Talks

STBY office Amsterdam

On 20 January we will be getting together to discuss a recently published and interesting book related to Service Design. This time it’s Tim Brown’s new book ‘Change by Design’. A must read for everyone in the field, so why not come and talk about it with a group of peers in the field?

Enough time to order the book, read it over Christmas, and be ready for some fresh perspectives by 20 January. So no excuses!

Service Design Thinks 2 - Service Design at Scale

The Sense Loft
4th Floor
68/70 Wardour Street
London W1F 0TB
United Kingdom

The second Service Design Thinks event will focus on the idea of ‘service design at scale’. We’ve got three really interesting speakers representing very different approaches to service design practice who’ll be sharing their experiences of designing for, and working at, large scale in services. They (and their talks) are:

  • Steven Baker - 0 - 2 million customers in one year: Designing a mobile banking service for 21st century Africa.
  • Julia Schaeper - Building design capability in the NHS: Design-led service innovation in the worlds 3rd largest organisation.
  • James Gardner - Engaging everyone in innovation: Building a market for service innovation in one of the UK’s largest banking groups.

They’ll be presenting inspiring stories and projects that focus on large scale service designs or design in large scale service organisations. They’ll be answering questions like:

  • How do you plan for scale in your service design?
  • How to you cope with rapid scaling of your service design if you didn’t plan for it?
  • How do you innovate at scale across large service organisations?
  • What’s different about designing for scale?

Register for tickets and find out more about the event on the Eventbrite page (tickets available from 12 noon on the 19th of October). Hope to see you there!

Service Design Thinks 1

The Sense Loft
4th Floor
68/70 Wardour Street
London W1F 0TB
United Kingdom

Thanks to all who came down to the first Service Design Thinks. The event was a great success, with a packed out senseloft playing host to our four brilliant speakers who gave us a fascinatingly broad view of current service design practice.

Alice Casey and Jo Harrington introduced a range of new tools, perspectives and ideas from their public service design projects at Involve, NESTA and Barnet Council.

Joel Bailey gave us a brisk tour of service design on the front line of one of the UKs biggest websites - businesslink.gov.uk - and Karl Humphreys talked us through his two killer apps for service designing - Propositions and Prototyping through his work on the Heathrow Personal Rapid Transit programme.

We’re working on the videos of the talks and will post them as soon as they are ready, and we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve decided on the next Service Design Thinks event timing. In the meantime, Lauren has posted a few photos of the event on Flickr.
